Junior Teams at Adelaide Olympic

At Adelaide Olympic our junior programs are designed to help our younger players learn new skills and gain valuable experience on and off the field, that will hopefully take them on to greater things in the future. Our highly experienced and dedicated coaches are all committed to teaching all children in a safe, fun, fair and enjoyable environment.

The club takes tremendous pride in being a local community focused organisation providing opportunities for all.

Development Squad
(4-5 years old)

Our Development Squad program is a fun, safe, friendly way to teach little ones who are turning 4 or 5 years old this year how fun the game of soccer can be.

During the program, we run 45 minute sessions that build skills through games and simple drills, delivered in a happy, inclusive environment.

Every player gets plenty of time using a ball, with the aim of each session being to help children build their motor skills while they’re enjoying themselves. And most of all, we have have a few laughs, play some games and help to build their confidence while having lots of fun.

MiniRoos Squads
(6-12 years old)

MiniRoos is one of Australia’s biggest soccer program for kids. The program is open to 6-12 years old of all abilities and introduces the soccer to kids using short, fun-packed sessions.

At Adelaide Olympic our MiniRoo program focuses on learning new skills, being active and making great friends!

Children within the MiniRoo program are introduced to games and learn the many valuable skills that go together with being a part of a successful team.

Junior Squad
(13-18 years old)

Our Junior teams are for boys and girls from 13 to 18 years old, with teams competing in Football Federation of South Australia's Junior League.

Juniors are introduced to a larger game and  play 11-a-side on a full-sized soccer field.

We continue to work with our Juniors to assist in their development of learning new skills and gaining valuable experience on and off the field.

Over recent years, our Adelaide Olympic Junior teams have proven to be formidable opponents, with many reaching the semi-finals and finals at the end of the season.

  • What team will my child play in?
Age brackets are categorised by year of birth. For example, if the child turns 10 in 2022, the child will be in the 10s team. Allocating a player outside of their expected age bracket is at the Juniors Technical Director, Coaches and the Juniors Coordinator’s discretion. An exemption may also need to be sought by the Football Federation, particularly if a child plays below their age group (i.e. has never played soccer before). For further information, please contact juniordirector@aofc.com.au
  • How are the teams made up?
We accommodate multiple boys, girls and some mixed teams ranging in age groups from U6s to U16s. Primarily teams are formed on a first come (registered) first serve basis. In some instances we may have more than one team in the same age group. In these circumstances, we will consider requests for players to play in the same team as their friends however, please be aware that these requests may not always be granted subject to restricted availability. At the discretion of the club and coaches teams may also be formed based on a players ability, Training between teams at times can be combined, however team separation for some training drills aids tailored training sessions that best suits players abilities, supporting player development.
  • How do I know which age group my child will be in?
Players qualify for their age group based on their age as at 31 Dec last year. For example, a player in Under 9 must be 8 as at 31 Dec last year or in other words, turns 9 during the year they are playing in.
  • Can my child play ‘up’ or ‘down’ an age group?
Only a limited number of children may play down an age group (according to FFSA regulations). Playing up may be considered depending on several factors such as player numbers, individual skill etc. This is at the discretion of the club. Occasionally players may be invited to play up or down an age group to allow for appropriate numbers in teams.
  • Can my child play with his/her school friends or sibling/s?
Generally we only take requests for siblings to play together or players who need to travel together. We will do our best to meet requests, although it may mean allocating a child to a lower or higher age group than may otherwise be the case.
  • How do we register?
Registrations can be made either online or in person at the club. A deposit or full payment will need to accompany your registration. If you have submitted your form online, you will need to ensure prompt payment at the club to secure your child place in the squad. Please find attached a club registration form for download.
  • Do I need to register with Play Football?
Yes. All players are required to register via the Play Football website annually irrespective of whether they have played before or not. You can access the Play Football website here. Simply follow the prompts and submit your registration ahead of the season.
  • Can I register after the season starts?
Generally speaking, registrations close after our off-season training and uniform fitting days (held in November). There are exceptions, however this will be entirely dependent on the coach and the requirements for the team, whether they have the required player numbers and the development opportunities available within the age group. To find out what opportunities are available, please pop by the club on either a Wednesday or Friday and speak with one of our team members and the coaches.
  • How do I know which age group my child will be in?
Players qualify for their age group based on their age as at 31 Dec last year. For example, a player in Under 9 must be 8 as at 31 Dec last year or in other words, turns 9 during the year they are playing in.
  • What are school vouchers and how do I get one?
Sports Vouchers is a Government of South Australia initiative for primary school age children from Reception to Year 9 to receive a $100 discount from sport organisation fees for 2021. Sports Vouchers are non-transferable and are only redeemable once per child per calendar year. For more information please click here.
  • When are games played?
Games are generally played on a Sunday and commence in April. The season game times are released ahead of the season commencing and are available from your team manager.
  • Where are games played?
Our training and all home games are played at our AOFC home ground, located at APEX Football Stadium - Cowan Street, Angle Park. Away games are played at our competitors home grounds. Generally these are assigned in a district for the season e.g. North, North-East, West, South. Game locations are available on the MyGameDay app at the beginning of the season.
  • When is the soccer season?
Exact dates vary each season, but generally speaking our league season runs between the start of term 2 in late April / early May to the end of term 3 in September.
  • What do the children need for training?
Children will be required to wear their training uniform (black strip). If your child is new to the club, they will be required to wear appropriate clothing. All children must have soccer boots and shin pads. If your child does not have these, they will not be able to train. Please ensure your child also has a clearly named water bottle for training too.
  • Where do the children train?
All Adelaide Olympic teams will train at the clubs home ground located at APEX Football Stadium (Formerly known as The Parks) 2-46 Cowan Street Angle Park, South Australia 5010
  • What day(s) is training?
Off season training will start in late October and will carry through until mid December. Pre season training will recommence in late January / early February but is flexible depending on the preference of the coach and the age of the children. Training days and times are usually on Wednesday and Friday nights, starting at 5:30 pm until 6:30pm. Again, timing of trainings is dependent on the preference of the coach and the parents.
  • Do we need to travel for games?
Yes, approximately half of the games are played away (metro SA) and the other half are played on our home ground at APEX Football Stadium (Cowan Street, Angle Park). This is for all age groups. Parents are responsible for their own transport or they can organise car-pooling with fellow team members.
  • At what age does a child qualify for MiniRoos?
Boys and girls must be 5 at any time during the calendar year to be eligible to register for club football. We do however offer a development squad for players who are 4 and have a keen interest in the sport. This is run in accordance with our U5, giving younger children exposure to training and new skills without the weekly game commitment. For further information or to check your child eligibility, please contact the club directly.
  • How does a child learn to play 11v11 if they are playing MiniRoos?
The progression through the MiniRoos formats of 4v4, 7v7 and 9v9 is a sound educational method and process to ready your child to play 11v11. The progression helps players discover the differences in the size of the field and size of the goal and the benefits of having more space. It also helps children to learn to use different and well-developed techniques to play a more tactical game, as well as assisting them in understanding the role of different positions and determining what best suits them.
  • Why no goalkeepers until Under 8s?
The role of the goalkeeper in football is uniquely specialised and typically players develop as goalkeepers at a later age. In the youngest age groups, keepers can be uninvolved in the game for long periods, which can be uninteresting and sometimes means they do not feel part of the team.
  • Are the coaches cleared to work with children?
All coaches, committee and adult volunteers working with children will have had a working with children clearance to work with the kids in accordance with state and federal requirements.
